Let
love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil; cling to what
is good.
Romans 12:9 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
When this says to let love be
without hypocrisy, it means that we should not pretend to love others when we
really don’t. We need to truly love, genuinely with pure hearts. To pretend to
love someone when we really don’t is not only fake, but a lie, a mockery in the
face of the One who is love. We love because God loved us, and we are to love
as He does. There is nothing fake or pretentious about God. In the same purity
of heart, we are also to abhor what is evil. To abhor means to hate, detest,
despise, or be repulsed by. It is a strong word, and that is how we should feel
about anything that is ungodly. We need to keep away from any form of
ungodliness, for anything that is not of God is of satan. There is no middle
ground. We must choose which side we are on. Cling to what is good. Love truly
and purely. Reject anything that is ungodly.
