Devotions: The Hope of Our Strength

Be strong and let your heart take courage,
All you who hope in the Lord.
Psalm 31:24 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

In this psalm, David bounces back and forth between asking God for help in his distress and affirming his faith and trust in God. It seems as if he is continually tempted to despair, to be discouraged, but every time he returns to God. Whenever he is distracted by what is going on around him, he refocuses his gaze on the One who is stronger than his circumstances and more powerful than his enemies. That is where David’s hope and confidence came from; his faith in the Lord. This verse is the last in the psalm and aptly summarizes his discourse. Regardless of what is going on, hope in God. Take courage. Be strong. Trust God to fight your battles, right your wrongs, and rescue you. Have faith and let Him do what He has promised! He will never fail, never leave. He is always faithful and trustworthy. Let that give you courage!
