Devotions: Looking Forward at Christmas

Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat! But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.
2 Peter 3:11-13 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

We look forward to what is to come. What we have now is temporary. This world will end. We need to keep eternity in view, because one day that is all we will have. That is what Christmas reminds us, that as Jesus came once to bring peace, He will come again to bring judgment. We need to heed His first coming so that we will not be lost in the second coming. What sort of people should we be in conduct in view of that? How should that motivate us to live, knowing what is true? Not only should that drive us to be as much like Christ as we can, but it should also push us to reach as many people as possible, to call the lost and give them the hope we share. His promises always come true. We can trust that. Let us help others know and believe that as well. Let us use that to motivate us to righteous and godly living. Let Christmas remind us this life is temporary, that eternity is what is important.
