Devotions: The God of Christmas

You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness;
Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You
With the oil of gladness above Your companions.”
Hebrews 1:9 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

This is talking about Jesus. He is exalted and anointed because of His righteousness. Satan wanted that prestige, to be exalted above all others, and he tried to take it. That is why he was cast out. The difference is that Jesus is humble. He did what is right and didn’t seek honor or recognition for it. Satan wanted the honor without the work. Jesus only cared about doing what is right and didn’t care about being honored at all. In fact, He was willing to give up His place on the throne, be born as a baby on earth, and suffer even though He had done no wrong. That is why He is God. Not that Jesus was chosen by God the Father, one did not exist before the other, but that is what makes Him God. God is humble. He does what is right for the sake of righteousness. While entering the world in a state of humility, He came into a state of glory. That humble manger afforded both to the King of the world.
