Therefore,
brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and
choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble;
2 Peter 1:10 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
Just because we appear to do
the right things does not mean our hearts have been changed. True salvation
transforms our hearts and thereby our lives. We do not want to be found blind
or short-sighted, deceived by our actions. Other verses also talk about working
out our salvation, meaning not that we are in some way earning it, but that we
live in such a way to prove that we are saved. That transformation of heart and
life is proof and surety that we have been saved. We need to strive for those
qualities which are the result of a changed heart, the result of the Holy
Spirit’s work in us. We need to be diligent and zealous for the things of God.
As long as we practice them, we will not fall. This does not mean that we will
never make mistakes, but that we will not fall away from the faith. We are
human, we will make mistakes periodically, but with the Spirit transforming our
hearts, those times should become less frequent. The word translated stumble
here refers to loss of salvation, not making a mistake. That is why we need to
be diligent in making sure of our salvation, working to prove that we are
saved, so that we have that assurance, to ensure that we don’t fall away. The key here is seeking that changed heart,
seeking the transforming work of the Spirit. As long as we genuinely seek that,
we have assurance, no matter how we mess up. Are you doubting your salvation?
Do you seek to be changed by the Spirit? Ask God for assurance that you are
His, and keep seeking to be Christ-like.
