but
if anyone loves God, he is known by Him.
1 Corinthians 8:3 New American Standard Bible (NASB)
This verse comes in a passage
talking about knowledge and love. Knowledge makes a person arrogant, but loves
encourages others. Loves seeks to make others better and build them up. We need
to be careful, for in gaining knowledge we can come to believe that we are
better than we really are. We can assume that we are safe when we aren’t.
Arrogant knowledge does not look objectively at self to examine one’s faults,
but assumes one has no faults. What is more important than what we know is to
love. If we love God, we will gain the knowledge we need through humility and
more importantly be known by God. That is the key difference between knowledge
and love. Plain knowledge is not personal. Love is about relationship. By
having a loving relationship with God, we become known by Him, but if we only
“know” God we are not necessarily known by Him. That is what happened when
Jesus said “not all who cry ‘Lord Lord’ will enter the kingdom of heaven.”
Those who are not known by God will hear Him say “I never knew you.” Is your
knowledge of God personal or intellectual? Do you love Him or simply know about
Him? More importantly, does He know you?
