Devotions: Choose Your God

No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.
Matthew 6:24 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

We can only have one God. I believe that is part of why God refers to Himself as the “One true God.” There are in fact many things which could become gods to us, and many other gods in other religions. He is not the only god which exists, but He is the only True God Who made all of creation. He is more powerful than all others. He is the only One who knows all things, who has always existed, who sustains all of life and creation in Himself. Unfortunately, even we as Christians often forget that. We praise and adore other things more highly than Him. We desire other things more than Him. Other things have a higher priority in our lives than He does. Anything that fits into even one of those categories is an idol. And we cannot have both for we will love one and hate the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. That is just how it works. Imagine having two boyfriends or girl friends at the same time, or trying to work two jobs at the same time (both 9-5). It just doesn’t work. We have to choose who our true God is. We have to choose who we will serve and love and be devoted to. Who do you choose? What will you do to make Him first in your life?
