911 is the number we call (in the US ) when there is an emergency,
when we need help, when there is a serious problem that we can’t handle on our
own. It is a number for protection, security and even salvation (i.e. from a
burning house or a flood). There is a spiritual 911 as well, that is God, and
we see that clearly in Psalm 91:1.
Psalm 91 New American Standard Bible (NASB)
He who
dwells in the shelter of the Most High
Will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
Will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
God is our shelter and refuge from storms, from attacks,
from everything. If we make God our shelter and dwell in Him then we will live
in the shadow of the most powerful being in the universe. Note that dwelling
and abiding require more than just saying “He is my God”, we have to go to Him,
actively live in Him. He is always a shelter but we have to remain in Him in
order to be protected.
I will say to
the Lord,
“My refuge and my fortress,
My God, in whom I trust!”
For it is He who delivers you from the snare of the trapper
And from the deadly pestilence.
My God, in whom I trust!”
For it is He who delivers you from the snare of the trapper
And from the deadly pestilence.
We must claim God as our refuge, we must rest in Him, completely
trusting His control and power, turning to Him first, before all others. The
reason we do this is because He is the only One Who can deliver us from the
traps of the enemy or the destruction of evil. There are times when we may
think that we delivered ourselves, but that is deception. Only God can truly
deliver us from evil.
He will cover you with
His pinions,
And under His wings you may seek refuge;
His faithfulness is a shield and bulwark.
And under His wings you may seek refuge;
His faithfulness is a shield and bulwark.
Pinion is another word for wing. He will shelter us like a hen shelters
her chicks under her wings from cold, storm and predator. We are safe there,
and the wings that we take refuge under is His faithfulness. We have security
in the fact that He is infinitely faithful. He will never leave or forsake us,
He will never let us down. It is a shield to protect us from enemies and a
bulwark to protect us from the flood.
You will not be
afraid of the terror by night,
Or of the arrow that flies by day;
Of the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
Or of the destruction that lays waste at noon.
A thousand may fall at your side
And ten thousand at your right hand,
But it shall not approach you.
You will only look on with your eyes
And see the recompense of the wicked.
For you have made the Lord, my refuge,
Even the Most High, your dwelling place.
No evil will befall you,
Nor will any plague come near your tent.
Or of the arrow that flies by day;
Of the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
Or of the destruction that lays waste at noon.
A thousand may fall at your side
And ten thousand at your right hand,
But it shall not approach you.
You will only look on with your eyes
And see the recompense of the wicked.
For you have made the Lord, my refuge,
Even the Most High, your dwelling place.
No evil will befall you,
Nor will any plague come near your tent.
Because we take refuge in God, we have no need to be afraid
of anything, for nothing is more powerful than He is, nothing takes Him by
surprise, nothing can happen to us that He does not allow. This does not mean
that bad things will never happen, but that He is still in control. This sinful
world still takes its course, but we do not need to fear it when we are
sheltered by the Most High. We will have that security to see the evil of the
world and remain confident and peaceful because we are not afraid.
For He will
give His angels charge concerning you,
To guard you in all your ways.
They will bear you up in their hands,
That you do not strike your foot against a stone.
You will tread upon the lion and cobra,
The young lion and the serpent you will trample down.
To guard you in all your ways.
They will bear you up in their hands,
That you do not strike your foot against a stone.
You will tread upon the lion and cobra,
The young lion and the serpent you will trample down.
The reason is not only that we have Him as our shelter, but
also because He has set angels to watch over us, to help us and lift us up, to
protect us. It is important to remember that this is poetry, and while it is
still inspired Word, we need to be careful how we interpret it. This last verse
does not mean that we will never be bitten by a snake or attacked by a lion. The
author used poetic license, as it were, to describe the security we have in
God, the kind of protection we have in Him.
“Because he has loved
Me, therefore I will deliver him;
I will set him securely on high, because he has known My name.
“He will call upon Me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will rescue him and honor him.
“With a long life I will satisfy him
And let him see My salvation.”
I will set him securely on high, because he has known My name.
“He will call upon Me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will rescue him and honor him.
“With a long life I will satisfy him
And let him see My salvation.”
This is God speaking, stating that because we love Him, He
will deliver us. Because we know His name intimately and personally, He will
set us in a place of safety. When we call He will answer. He will be with us
always and rescue us when we need it. He will give us honor, if we honor Him.
We will be satisfied with a long, abundant life, and will know His salvation.
Make God your emergency number. Make Him your life support.
Abide in His shelter always so that He can protect you in times of trouble.
