Devotions: True Greatness and Leadership

But the greatest among you shall be your servant.
Matthew 23:11 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

True biblical leadership requires humility. As Jesus’ example shows, He did not come to be served, but to serve, even though He is God. He modeled what our leadership should look like. Most people want to flaunt their authority, exerting their ability to make others serve them, but Jesus said it should not be that way with us. Instead, we show our true greatness by serving others. Again, true love is sacrifice, so we must serve others to show that we truly love them. God’s wisdom is often contrary to the world. If we are to be considered great in God’s kingdom, we must make ourselves low, we must serve, and we must give up ourselves for others. That is true greatness and love. That is the key to true leadership. If you want to be a good leader, if you want to be great, then you must be willing to serve.
