For even the Son of Man
did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for
many.
Mark 10:45 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
So often we equate power and
authority with being served, having others to one’s bidding, but that is not
what true biblical power and authority mean. Jesus had every right to require
everyone to bow down to Him, to give Him the respect He was due, to do whatever
He wanted. Instead, He came to serve those who hated Him, to sacrifice Himself
for those who rejected Him. The Bible says that there is no greater love than to
give one’s life for another. This is true love: sacrifice. Jesus showed true
love and true leadership in His sacrificial humility. He is God, yet He did not
regard equality with God something to show off. He chose instead to become the
lowest of the low, to serve instead of be served, to love instead of hate. That
is what He calls us to do. He calls us to walk in His way: to sacrifice
ourselves for others, to serve those below us, to disregard whatever may make
us higher than another or give us status. That is the “way” we are to take.
