Devotions: Sweet and Wise

The wise in heart will be called understanding,
And sweetness of speech increases persuasiveness.
Proverbs 16:21 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

It is often said that a kind word turns away wrath. People who talk flatteringly can get others to buy just about anything. Kindness and gentleness move mountains, but this only comes from a heart that is wise. True kindness and gentleness are from God. People can flatter and sweet-talk but that only really works in short-term, superficial relationships. It will not smooth over a serious conflict, and may even make it worse. The sweetness of speech that can win a heart is the result of a heart invested in God, one that has been transformed by His word living in our hearts. From that will flow the fruit of the Spirit. If we have a heart seeking God, transformed by God, we will be understanding of others, our words will be sweet, and we will more easily and truly smooth over conflict. How is your heart? Are your words sweet? Will you ask God to transform you?
