Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth;
Keep watch over the door of my lips.
Keep watch over the door of my lips.
Psalm 141:3 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
Anyone who has ever tried to
“bridle the tongue” knows what an impossible task this is. Really we can’t do
it on our own. We need God’s help, to do it in God’s strength. Only then can we
honor Him with our words and bring life rather than death to our relationships.
We need God to guard our tongues. I’ve noticed that when I am indignant, and
about to say something I shouldn’t, my eye twitches. Every time. It’s a signal
that I need to keep my mouth shut. Unfortunately, I don’t always heed it, but
it is a way of God trying to help me guard my tongue. We need His help. We can’t
do it on our own. Ask Him to help you speak only what is good for others, what
will build up instead of destroy, truth instead of deceit. Submit your tongue
to Him.
