Devotions: The Nearness of God

You drew near when I called on You;
You said, “Do not fear!”
Lamentations 3:57 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

The Lord is near to all who call on Him in truth (Ps 145). Often in trials and suffering it feels like God is distant, like He has abandoned us, like He does not see or hear, but that is not true. He is near to those who love and follow Him. He is near when we call on Him in truth. He is with us always. He cares for the brokenhearted. That does not mean that He will change our circumstances, but it does mean that He loves us and will comfort us in the midst of the storms. And when He comes to us He tells us not to fear, because He is with us. No one can harm us when He is with us. Nothing can happen to us that He does not see. We can trust in His power and sovereignty to control what is going on, and we can trust that He is good no matter what happens. Even when the world falls apart, He is still good and He will make good come from the bad if we will trust in Him, good that is far greater than the bad we experience. Trust in Him, believe that He is near and He is good, and rest in Him while He acts.
