Devotions: Our Only Hope

And now, Lord, for what do I wait?
My hope is in You.
Psalm 39:7 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

We don’t know exactly what David was distressed over, but he begins this psalm passionately upset, even despondent, rashly expounding the vanity of morality and life. It is in verse 7 that he is able to control himself and turn his gaze heavenward. Other translations say “where do I put my hope?” In a sense, life is vain. We have a short time on earth and no one is exempt from hardship, though for some reason it seems as if the evil triumph and the righteous lose. But that is only because we don’t see how the story ends, nor do we see what is going on behind the scenes. David realized this which is why he turned to God, the only one who can see those things. Because God not only sees but is in control of everything that goes on, He is the obvious one to trust and hope in. We put our hope in so many things: money, marriage, work, stocks, sports, friends. They all let us down at some point. That is why we can/should only put our hope in God. He is the only one who will never let us down, the only one we can trust implicitly. He is the only one who can save us. We also need to be aware of His chastising. Sometimes the hard times we go through are His discipline for our sinful actions. We need to respond rightly to that, repent of our sin and turn away from it. Make God your only hope no matter what you are facing. He will not disappoint you.

  1. A great message,Evelyn~ Often times people are looking in the wrong places for the "hope" they are searching for and will be disappointed every time, only to look elsewhere ending in more disappointment.
Jesus Christ, our redemption, gives life, and our hope is in Him alone.
To God be all glory for His unending love, grace and mercy to ALL mankind.

    Have a beautiful day~
