She
will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people
from their sins.
Matthew 1:21 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
Joseph, the earthly (though
not biological) father of Jesus found out that his fiancé, Mary, was pregnant and
it wasn’t his. He planned to have her sent away, but before he could, an angel
came and confirmed Mary’s claim that her child was the Son of God. He then gave
instruction for naming the baby. Names were important back then. They often
described a person’s character or even standing with God. Jesus means “Jehovah
is Salvation.” This signified that the long awaited Savior of God’s people had
finally come. They had been looking forward to this for thousands of years. Yet
Jesus came, not to save them from Rome ,
but from a greater tyrant: sin. Before Jesus came, all people were enslaved to
sin with no hope of salvation. But through Jesus we have the hope and promise
of being released from that bondage. Those who believe that He is the Son of
God, that He died to pay for their sins, and accept Him as their Lord and
Savior will be saved, released, redeemed! His purpose was much greater than
overthrowing the government; He overthrew the centuries old rule of satan, a
feat which would last for eternity. That is what Christmas is all about! Has He
saved you from your sins?
