Devotions: Follow the Shepherd

And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah,
Are by no means least among the leaders of Judah;
For out of you shall come forth a Ruler
Who will shepherd My people Israel.
Matthew 2:6 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

This is a quote from the prophecy of Micah, foretelling of Christ’s birth and birth place. This was the hometown of David. He was the first king to come from that town, Jesus (his descendant) was the last and greatest. Where David was a human king over a physical kingdom, Jesus was the King of kings over a spiritual kingdom. Where David was sinful, Jesus was perfect. When David died, that was the end. When Jesus died, that was only the beginning. The Jews thought Jesus would be an earthly king like David, but He had a loftier ambition. He would be the Savior and Shepherd of the world. This showed that He would not only be king but also high priest. They were supposed to be the shepherds of the people, but they had failed, leading the people astray. Jesus came to correct that, to lead His people home. He would not only be king, but also counselor, comforter, advocate, redeemer, friend. He is everything that we need. The Jews of His day were disappointed, even outraged, because Jesus wasn’t what they wanted. Their agenda got in the way of their Salvation. Don’t let that be your fate. Instead of demanding that Jesus be what you want Him to be, accept Him as Who He is, that He is all that you need. Follow the Shepherd!
