Devotions: Fear and Life

The fear of the Lord leads to life,
So that one may sleep satisfied, untouched by evil.
Proverbs 19:23 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

The fear of God leads to life, security and protection. This is not referring to the kind of fear we equate with horror films or dark spooky nights, but a kind of reverential awe which inspires respect. Many people are “afraid” of God, many more have no respect for Him. These promises only come to those who have a healthy, biblical fear of God. Why do these things follow fear of the Lord? Fear of the Lord leads to a godly lifestyle. If we respect Him and view Him as being all knowing and loving, we will obey Him and strive to be like Him. This godly lifestyle leads to true, vibrant life which no amount of worldly living can even come close to. It also leads to security, because only those who fear God will trust Him, and only those who trust Him feel His security. Knowing and trusting that He is in control of everything and is working with our good in mind will lead to a peace and security of mind that no amount of money or alarm systems can rival. It also leads to protection. Living a godly lifestyle which avoids sin at all costs will keep us away from the natural pitfalls and consequences that accompany sin. It makes me sad to watch secular tv shows, because so much of the drama, broken relationships and consequences could be avoided if the characters believed in Christ, trusted Him to guide them, and endeavored to live godly lives. Fearing God does not ensure that we will never sin or be harmed by others, but it does ensure that we will always be in God’s hands, that our souls will never be touched, and that we will be content no matter what happens. And one day, all that will fade away and we will enter eternity where there is no more sin, evil, harm or fear. Fear the Lord and experience His promises!
