Fight
the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were
called, and you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
1 Timothy 6:12 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
Paul is here wrapping up his
letter to Timothy, a young minister, by encouraging him to stay true. Paul
previously talks about the greedy motives some have as ministers and
evangelists. He argues that that should not be the case because it leads to
even worse things that will dishonor God and ruin His reputation. We should
instead pursue the things of God, godliness, righteousness, love, gentleness.
Instead of creating pointless fights about things that don’t matter, we should
fight the good fight of faith, not a fight with people but with the sinful nature
inside of us. In doing so, we should focus on the eternal life we have in Jesus
and let that be our goal and motivation. We need to work out our faith,
continue to pursue perfection in Christ and grow in godliness. Our lives should
be an example, proof of what we believe, to all around us. It should be obvious
who we love and serve (Jesus). Don’t lose heart, this struggle will end one
day, and then we will have that which we hope and work for: eternal life! Ask
God to help you fight the good fight, to live for Him, honoring Him, and to
boldly stand for His truth.
