When He
went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and felt compassion for them and
healed their sick.
Matthew
14:14 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
This is a common scene for
Jesus: He saw people (in need), felt compassion and healed/taught/delivered
them. He was a Man who acted upon the emotions He felt in a wise and godly way.
He didn’t reject the feelings or the people, but He was also not controlled by his
emotions. What is interesting about this particular occasion is that Jesus had
been at sea in solitude mourning the death of His cousin John the Baptist. That
kind of mourning doesn’t end over night, yet He didn’t remain aloof. He
continued to serve those in need even when He was Himself suffering. That is
true compassion: putting others’ needs above your own, putting aside your own
feelings, needs, desires etc. for the sake of others. When did you last have
that level of compassion? The kicker is that this isn’t an attitude to have at
certain times. It is an inner posture we should have all the time. We should
readily, willingly, make that sacrifice. We should always choose to put others
first, considering their feelings and needs as more important than our own. Ask
God to grow that in you.
