They said
to Him, “Lord, we want our eyes to be opened.” Moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes; and
immediately they regained their sight and followed Him.
Matthew
20:33-34 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
As Jesus was leaving Jericho , two blind men
called out to Him, begging for mercy. The crowd tried to quiet them, but they
called out even louder. Jesus asked what they wanted Him to do for them and
this was their answer. Jesus was moved by their cries for mercy. He is not
unfeeling or cold. Their pleas were desperate, but initially they didn’t cry
for something specific, just for Him to notice and care for them. They were
humble yet persistent in their request. He in His infinite care listened to
them and asked further, and characteristic of His nature, He healed the
physical and spiritual. He opened not only the eyes of the body but also of the
soul. We are all blind spiritually in the beginning, but if we come to Him
Jesus will open our eyes so that we can see Him and His light and truth. The
result of their healing was their devotion. Instead of rushing to tell friends
and family or to engage in some activity they had been denied before, they
chose to follow Him. Is that your response to Jesus? Is your initial reaction
devotion to Him? Ask Him to open your eyes so that you can see clearly.
