Shall I ransom them from the power of Sheol? Shall I
redeem them from death? O Death, where are your thorns? O
Sheol, where is your sting? Compassion will be hidden from My sight. Though
he flourishes among the reeds,
An east wind will come, The
wind of the Lord coming up from the wilderness; And his
fountain will become dry And his spring will be dried up; It will
plunder his treasury of every precious article.
Hosea
13:14-15 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
Just because God
has great love and compassion does not mean that He ignores the sin and
wrongful actions of His children. The Bible says in several places that He
disciplines those He loves, those who are truly His children. Discipline is not
meant as cruelty, but as correction, to teach the child how to behave. As
children mature they need less harsh discipline. So as we mature, God uses less
stern measures to correct us. The more open our hearts are to correction, the
more gently He corrects us. These verses are talking about the tribe of
Ephraim, which needed severe discipline because they would not listen, they would
not change. Don’t be like them. Don’t harden your heart and stiffen your neck
so that God has to turn to more drastic measures to teach and correct you.
Determine to listen to God, to learn from God, to live a godly life that
reflects and glorifies Him.
