But
Daniel made up his mind that he would not defile himself with the
king’s choice food or with the wine which he drank; so he sought permission
from the commander of the officials that he might not defile himself. Now God granted Daniel favor and compassion in the
sight of the commander of the officials
Daniel
1:8-9 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
Daniel had been
taken captive to Babylon when Jerusalem was overthrown. Because he was
young, intelligent and attractive the king had him and others like him trained
and educated in Babylonian ways and religion so that they could serve the king.
These youths were given all the best which the king himself enjoyed, including
his food. This was done in part to get these young men to become Babylonian, to
make them forget their home and heritage, which is also why their names were
changed. Daniel knew the danger of compromise. He knew that giving in in this
seemingly small manner would lead to other, larger areas of compromise. He knew
that remaining pure and set apart for God were more important than anything. So
he asked the man in charge if he could forego their rich diet and eat simple
foods and water. The official was concerned that it would be obvious Daniel was
on a diet, but God granted Daniel compassion and favor. Not only was the
official willing to go along with Daniel’s idea, but Daniel also became
healthier than all the other young men. God honored Daniel’s devotion to Him by
blessing him in ways that seemed counterintuitive. In a sense, it was a miracle.
Are you as devoted to God as Daniel? Do you do everything in your power to
remain untainted by the world and its ways? Ask God to reveal areas of
compromise and for strength to stand your ground and become set apart for Him.
