Then Daniel
went to his house and informed his friends, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah,
about the matter, so that they might request
compassion from the God of heaven concerning this mystery, so that Daniel and
his friends would not be destroyed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.
Daniel
2:17-18 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
At this point,
the king had a disturbing dream of which he did not know the meaning, but he
also apparently doubted his wise men so he demanded that they interpret his
dream without knowing what the dream was. Obviously, they couldn’t, so he
threatened to kill all the wise men (Daniel and his friends included). When
they heard of this, they prayed for God to have compassion on them so they
would not be killed. God granted their request and Daniel was able to tell the
king his dream and interpret it. The king praised Daniel, but Daniel made sure
it was understood that the wisdom came from God, that he was only a vessel.
This caused the king to put trust in God and appoint Daniel as one of the
highest counselors in the nation. So often we think that because compassion is
a characteristic of God, that He will give it without being asked, and
sometimes He does, but not always. If we are in a situation where we need help
and compassion (from Him or anyone else), we need to ask. Prayer is vital to
our spiritual growth and relationship with God. It also helps us to put our
trust in Him. Receiving compassion without asking will eventually lead to a
feeling of entitlement, but asking for it every time we need it, and then
thanking God when it comes, will help to keep us humble and trusting. Don’t be
too afraid or too proud to ask.
