Devotions: Restrained Compassion

Look down from heaven and see from Your holy and glorious habitation; Where are Your zeal and Your mighty deeds? The stirrings of Your heart and Your compassion are restrained toward me. For You are our Father, though Abraham does not know us And Israel does not recognize us. You, O Lord, are our Father, Our Redeemer from of old is Your name.
Isaiah 63:15-16 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

After recounting God’s mercies, Isaiah beckons God to return His people to Him. They had turned from Him and were as people who had never known Him. At the time this was written, they had not yet been defeated or exiled. They were still living in rampant sin. Isaiah begged God to bring the people back to devoted service to Him. Unfortunately, that path led through devastating circumstances. Often, the way to reformation is through great pain. The sin, bad habits or ungodly character traits which need to be removed are so attached they have to be cut or burned away like cancer. The road to restoration hurts. It requires humility to admit we were wrong, that blow to pride can sting. It requires sacrificing something which we hold dear, that sacrifice isn’t easy. But God is compassionate. He will restore if we are willing to go through the pain to get there. Running from the pain will prevent our healing. Are you willing to go through the fire?
