Devotions: Redeeming Compassion

As for your birth, on the day you were born your navel cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water for cleansing; you were not rubbed with salt or even wrapped in cloths. No eye looked with pity on you to do any of these things for you, to have compassion on you. Rather you were thrown out into the open field, for you were abhorred on the day you were born. When I passed by you and saw you squirming in your blood, I said to you while you were in your blood, ‘Live!’ Yes, I said to you while you were in your blood, ‘Live!’
Ezekiel 16:4-6 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

Ezekiel was a contemporary of Jeremiah, and was exiled along with Israel while Jeremiah was in Judah, yet they each prophesied to the other’s country. Here, Ezekiel is describing the lowly state of Judah, and even of mankind. Judah had turned away from God and made itself deplorable in His sight, but in the same way, we all as humans are born sinners, separated from God. We all would perish without God’s love and compassion. He saw us in our dreadful state and chose to save us. While we were dead in our transgressions, He said “live!” While we were still His enemies, He died for us. There is no greater expression or example of compassion than this! Remember where you came from! Allow that to shape your perspective and grow your love for your Redeemer!
