May Your compassion come to me that I may live,
For Your law is my delight.
For Your law is my delight.
Psalm
119:77 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
Here the psalmist is
begging God to have compassion on him, to save his life. He is in some sort of
affliction, but interestingly, verse 75 says that he knows God has afflicted
him in faithfulness. God’s faithfulness is not determined by the circumstances
of our lives, it is determined by His character. He is always faithful, so no
matter what He does, He is faithful in doing it. He is just as faithful in
forgiving our sins as He is in allowing affliction. He realizes that he
deserves nothing good, that he cannot earn God’s compassion, but he asks for it
anyways, because God is faithful. That is why he asks, because compassion and
mercy are not based on merit, rather they are given in spite of it. He is not bargaining
with God saying “I delight in Your law so you owe me compassion” rather he is
stating that he has hope in God’s compassion and favor because he delights in
the law. It is that delight in the law which gives him hope and assurance that
God is good, compassionate, gracious and merciful. The author is calling on
God’s promises, not manipulating God to help him. Do you find it hard to hope
in God’s promises? Could that be because you do not delight in His law? Delight
in God’s laws and find the hope and compassion you seek.
