Devotions: Rejected Compassion

For the fortified city is isolated, A homestead forlorn and forsaken like the desert; There the calf will graze,
And there it will lie down and feed on its branches. When its limbs are dry, they are broken off; Women come and make a fire with them, For they are not a people of discernment, Therefore their Maker will not have compassion on them. And their Creator will not be gracious to them.
Isaiah 27:10-11 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

One of the key lines in these verses is “for they are not a people of discernment.” One of the surest ways to make sure one doesn’t receive compassion is to reject the wisdom and understanding of God. It is readily open to all who will take it, but many reject God’s wisdom because they reject Him. They do not fear Him: they have no reverence for Him and no intention of submitting to His will and command. As with salvation, it is available to all, but we have to accept Him in order to receive it. Compassion is not something we earn or deserve, but it is something we can lose. Rejecting God, rejecting His love and refusing to love like Him is also denying His compassion. Where is your heart? Do you fear God?
