A righteous man has regard for the life of his
animal,
But even the compassion of the wicked is cruel.
But even the compassion of the wicked is cruel.
Proverbs
12:10 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
This chapter in
Proverbs is contrasting the righteous with the wicked. The righteous, or those
who follow God and live uprightly, value the lives of animals and treat them
kindly and fairly. Those who do not follow God’s ways view animals as mere
possessions and treat them cruelly. Even their supposed compassion and kindness
is still cruel. This could be seen in the way a person treats an animal; the
wicked’s supposed compassion could be instead of beating the animal; he would
have “compassion” on it by refraining from the beating and only withholding
food instead. The wicked supposes he is having compassion because he is being
kinder to it than he intended or wanted to, but is still cruel. Those who do
not live in God’s Word, by God’s ways, cannot comprehend true compassion or
kindness. It is not in their nature because God is not in their hearts. Moral
of the story: the righteous have compassion on all (even animals), the wicked
on none.
