Devotions: Wondrous Compassion

Splendid and majestic is His work,
And His righteousness endures forever.
He has made His wonders to be remembered;
The Lord is gracious and compassionate.
He has given food to those who fear Him;
He will remember His covenant forever.
Psalm 111:3-5 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

This is in the middle of a short psalm praising God. It is worth the read in its entirety! There is a progression here that I find interesting. It begins with praising God for His marvelous works, His wonders that He made to be remembered. Those works to be remembered are His characteristics of grace and compassion which are proven in His provision and faithfulness. God is fully capable of performing marvelous miracles, signs and wonders, but the greatest are the grace and compassion He has bestowed on wretches like us! We in no way deserve it, but He loves us so much that He chose to have grace instead of wrath, to show compassion instead of punishment. How great and marvelous is that! He saved us from the pit of sin and made us heirs of His kingdom! Is that not worthy of infinite praise?
