Truth. Something once so fundamental, now so subjective. It
seems that no one can agree what truth is any more. Truth has become whatever
anyone wants it to be, but it hasn’t always been that way. And it shouldn’t be.
Truth was once something hard and fast, written in stone as it were. In a way
it is, for it is written in the Bible which is not stone but the living Word of
God. God does not change so His Word and, therefore, His truth do not change.
God’s truth should be the basis of life, but how do we wear that as a belt?
Ephesians 6:14a New American
Standard Bible (NASB)
Stand firm therefore, having
girded your loins with truth
Back in that day, men wore tunics (which could be mistaken
for dresses). They were fairly long and somewhat restricting for physical
activity. How was a soldier to fight and run if he was hindered by his
garments? He would use a belt to tie up the loose ends of his tunic so that he
could move easily and yet remain covered.
As Christians, we are to keep our “tunics” tied up with the
belt of truth. Those tunics would be the undergarments I talked of a few weeks
ago; godly characteristics, power and Christ Himself. But how do we “tie them
up” with truth?
To gird in this sense figuratively means to equip oneself
with knowledge of the truth. In other words, we are to keep our undergarments
in check and out of our way by being knowledgeable of the truth, God’s truth.
We need to make sure that our character and power do not become misled or go
awry. We need to allow the truth to dictate every aspect of our lives.
John 8:31-32 New
American Standard Bible (NASB)
So Jesus was saying to those Jews
who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then you are
truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth,
and the truth will make you free.”
This truth is the truth of who He is, the truth of His deity
and salvation. We need to let that shape and transform our lives.
Romans 12:2 New
American Standard Bible (NASB)
And do not be conformed
to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so
that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good
and acceptable and perfect.
We need to accept God’s truth as absolute truth which
supersedes all else and allow it to mold our lives. We need to let that become
our identity; that we are His children, heirs of the King, forgiven, redeemed,
chosen and beloved. We are more than conquerors.
What will you do with this truth?
