Devotions: Compassion Barriers

Nothing from that which is put under the ban shall cling to your hand, in order that the Lord may turn from His burning anger and show mercy to you, and have compassion on you and make you increase, just as He has sworn to your fathers, if you will listen to the voice of the Lord your God, keeping all His commandments which I am commanding you today, and doing what is right in the sight of the Lord your God.
Deuteronomy 13:17-18 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

This came at the end of a warning against idolatry, which is to prefer or love something more than God. He told the people that if they discovered someone was trying to entice the people into idolatry all who engaged in it were to be killed and their things brought out and burned in order to thoroughly purge the sin from the land. Similarly, if a man committs adultery, the wife would destroy everything related to the other woman so as to purge the woman's memory from her husband. God will suffer no rival. We must have nothing to do with anything idolatrous, not even to tolerate it among our family because that sin will poison us all. We must hate what God hates if we are to be godly. His anger is against any idolatry and those who practice it. Getting rid of any trace of that idolatry is the only way to turn away His anger. Then, He will have compassion as He has promised. Put away anything which you value above God, make Him your greatest love and desire.
