Devotions: Blessings of Situation

How blessed are the people who are so situated;
How blessed are the people whose God is the Lord!

Psalm 144:15 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

David starts this psalm talking about who God is; the rock (firm foundation), teacher and trainer, His mercy, compassion, safety, deliverance, a shield from danger, refuge and overall Master. David then marvels that God, the supreme Creator and Power of the universe, would pay attention to mere men who are nothing compared to Him. David then cries out to God for help and intervention. But he doesn’t end his psalm-prayer with asking, he moves into praise to God for who He is and what He has already done, professing trust and faith in God to move. David finishes by asking God to help His people to prosper so that their children grow up like trees (firmly rooted and healthy) and lovely pillars to grace the world, that their flocks and fields would produce and provide for the people, and for relief from danger. Truly those who live that way are happy and prosperous! But that “situation” is not dependent on a life free from harm or mishap. Rather, the blessings of healthy prosperous children at least are dependent on a life rooted in God. We can have prosperity and peace in the midst of the toils of life if we are God’s people, if we make Him our strength and safety, if we seek His mercy, compassion and deliverance and trust Him to do what is best for us. God has promised to provide for His people, and He is a worker of miracles, so even if the world should fall, we can still trust Him for what we need. We need to seek His teaching and training in our lives, as David did, so that we know how to deal with the “battles” of life, so that we can become valiant spiritual warriors. Then we will be happy and prosperous!
