Devotions: Blessings in Helping Others

How blessed is he who considers the helpless;
The Lord will deliver him in a day of trouble.

Psalm 41:1 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

We are happy if we help the helpless, or poor, orphaned, needy etc. Not only do we receive the satisfaction that comes from helping others, which should be reason enough, and the Bible says that true religion is helping the widows and orphans in their need. But this verse also says that if we help others, God will deliver us when we are in need. Christianity is not a “God helps those who help themselves” but God helps those who help others. Other places in the Bible say that God has compassion on those who have compassion and doesn’t on those who don’t. It’s the golden rule played out. Receiving God’s help should not be our motive for helping others, but it is a benefit we receive from it. We are truly blessed in many ways by considering others above or before ourselves, but the only way to truly know that is to do it. So go out and help the helpless and be blessed!
