Devotions: The Choice of Freedom

So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.

John 8:36 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

We all begin life as slaves to sin. We are born into it just as human slaves can be born into slavery. They cannot be freed by themselves, their parents or friends. They can only be freed by the family who owns them. The only one who can free us from slavery to sin is Christ because He is ruler over all. He has conquered sin and death so that all who belong to Him are no longer under that slavery. His freedom cannot be taken away or cancelled. No one can overrule His purchase. But we can deny it. We can return to slavery by choice. Romans 6:16 says that we are a slave to the one we obey, either Christ or sin. Should we leave the freedom Christ gives us to return to slavery to sin? We must choose whether we will continue in His freedom or return to our old life of slavery. Will we do as the Israelites in the wilderness, pining for slavery because of the hardship of wandering? Choose true freedom and remain in it!
