Devotions: The Source of Encouragement

Now may the God who gives perseverance and encouragement grant you to be of the same mind with one another according to Christ Jesus

Romans 15:5 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

Ultimately, encouragement comes from God. Any encouragement that we can receive from others or the Bible is from God Himself. We cannot give encouragement if we are not “connected” or in-tune with God, and we cannot receive it if it does not come from God. It is essential to seek God for comfort and encouragement because just like love, joy and peace we can’t get it anywhere else. The Bible of course is God’s word, it was written by Him, so that is a fairly direct approach. But we still need to be connected with Him. We can read every encouraging verse in the Bible but if our relationship with God is not right it will not do us much good. The same is true with others, they can say the most wonderful things but if their heart isn’t right, or if our heart isn’t right, it will lack the full effectiveness it could have. We need to be connected to the source to receive the power. How is your connection?
