Do You Need to Clean the Tub?

Deep cleaning has become a very popular pastime lately with the necessity of staying home and needing something to do. Several weeks ago (before all of this started) I decided to scrub the tub on a whim (that is how most of my deep cleaning happens). Half way through cleaning I noticed how very dirty the tub had been. Before I started cleaning I hadn’t really noticed all the grime. It wasn’t until I compared the clean half of the tub to the dirty half that I realized just how dirty it had been. I was so used to the build-up of grime that I didn’t notice it.

Do You Need to be Cleansed?

Cleansing was a big part of Hebrew temple worship. One had to be ceremonially clean to offer sacrifices, and there were huge basins in the temple for the priests to wash in-between sacrifices. David wrote psalm after psalm about needing God to cleanse his heart, and many of the New Testament epistles reiterate that theme. Yet it is not a common idea in today’s church. We balk at the idea of needing to be cleansed, especially after salvation. Is cleansing a one time event or is it something we need to pursue on a regular basis?

Head Lice and Idols

I was talking with some friends from church the other day about kids getting head lice at school. They mentioned that it seems like it is always the same family that starts it. They surmised the reason is because when that family finds out they have it, they treat the kids but don’t pursue it by deep cleaning everything in the house to completely rid the family of the pests. So every few months, one of the creatures would find its way back to one of the kids and hitches a ride to school, spreading them all over again.

That situation reminded me of what I just read in Judges 1-5.
