Devotions: Trust Brings Peace

On the day I called, You answered me;
You made me bold with strength in my soul.

Psalm 138:3 New American Standard Bible 1995

God is faithful; He always keeps His promises. This is the main truth I’ve been teaching my Bible study class the last couple of weeks. While this truth seems almost too simple for Christians older than 5 or 6, it is foundational and necessary for all of us. Many people think that God does not hear or answer their prayers because they don’t see the answer they want, or that it doesn’t happen immediately. However, God hears us when we pray, and He does answer us immediately, He just doesn’t always act immediately, nor in the way we think He should. This issue comes from the fact that we still want to be God, we want to have control and we think that we know best. Unfortunately, we don’t. We don’t know everything, we aren’t in control no matter how hard we try, and we will never be God. Life goes so much easier when we relinquish control, trust God and wait on Him. We can know without a doubt that God hears our prayers and answers us immediately because He says He does and He never lies. Fully believing this truth will add so much peace, security and boldness to our lives because we will draw from God and have confidence in Him. Trying to maintain control, living life our way, or trying to make things go the way we want leaves us insecure, anxious and weak. It also causes us to miss God’s answers to prayer because we are looking for the answers we want. We can only be strong if we trust God. It is in our own weakness that His strength is perfected because it is then that we get out of His way and let Him work.

Are you anxious about life? Do you struggle to be able to do it all? Do you wonder if God even listens to you? Give up control. Surrender your life to God’s will and plan. Trust and believe that He does hear you and is answering your prayers right now even though you can’t see what He is doing. Step out of God’s way so that you can be filled with His peace and strength.
