But
I have trusted in Your lovingkindness;
My heart shall rejoice
in Your salvation.
I will sing to the Lord,
Because He has dealt
bountifully with me.
Psalm 13:5-6 New American Standard
Bible 1995
In this psalm of David, he asks God for help. He begins with open confession of his feelings and situation, asks God to see and deliver him, and talks about what his enemies will do if he is overthrown. He ends with these two verses. I have always loved the structure of David’s psalms. He is completely honest with God about his feelings and circumstances. He admits to being depressed and overwhelmed, but he doesn’t stop there. He always ends with complete trust in God. He knows without a doubt that God will deliver him, even though it seems impossible. He had unshakeable faith. He trusted in God’s loyal, hesed love. He rejoiced in God’s salvation, which he considered as a sure thing even though the time of Christ was still fifteen hundred years away. Even in the midst of his difficulties, he sang praises to God because of his firm trust in God’s faithful love. He remembered every time God had rescued him in the past and used that to encourage himself in the present.
God wants us to come to Him with everything. He wants us to be completely honest with Him. He won’t be hurt by our feelings. It is only in being open with Him that we can find healing. Even though He already knows how we feel and what we are going through, telling Him these things strengthens our relationship. It reassures our minds, comforts our hearts, and affirms His faithfulness and love.
What are you going through? Have you been honest to God about how you feel? Do you trust Him to deliver you? Take some time to talk openly with God. Remind yourself of what He has already done for you so that you can sing His praises during your time of trouble.
