Devotions: God's Word

Every word of God is tested;
He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.

Do not add to His words
Or He will reprove you, and you will be proved a liar.

Proverbs 30:5-6 New American Standard Bible 1995

Everything God says is tested, or better yet, proven. He is faithful in everything. What He says He will do. He can be trusted to keep His word. Notice it says “every.” Not one of God’s words has failed. Not once has He said something that wasn’t true. Not once has He said He would do something and not done it to perfection. Because of this He can be trusted and His Word can be trusted. The Bible is God’s Word to us, and it carries the same attributes that He does. It is as faithful and true as He is. Therefore, it can be trusted as implicitly as He can.

Because of His faithfulness and trustworthiness He is a shield to those who turn to Him. We can not only trust His word, but we can also trust Him to protect us when we turn to Him. Think of Him as a sanctuary or safe house, that place where nothing can ever reach us or harm us. If we take refuge in Him, He will protect us.

Because of God’s faithfulness, truth and trustworthiness, it is imperative that we take Him at His word exactly, no more, no less. Adding to (or taking away from) what He has said is very dangerous with tremendous consequences. We should never try to change the Word of God for any reason, no matter how slight the twist. In so doing, we misrepresent Him and make Him out to be a liar. We dishonor Him to those around us. He promises to reprove those who change what He says and we will be proven wrong because He is always right. In Revelation, it says that any who add to or detract from the words in this book will bring on themselves all the curses in the book. That is how seriously God takes honesty, integrity and truth.

Do you trust God? Do you believe His Word? Do you handle His word honestly and rightly?
