But from there you will seek the Lord your God, and you will find Him if
you search for Him with all your heart and all your soul.
Deuteronomy 4:29 New American Standard
Bible 1995
This was written shortly
before Moses died. The Israelites had finished their 40 years of wandering in
the wilderness because of their unbelief and were about to enter the Promised
Land. Moses wanted to encourage them to stay true to God and not be led astray
by the pagan cultures surrounding them. Consider this a commencement speech
sending off the graduates into the real world, if you will. Moses predicted
that they would fall into pagan worship of false gods (again,) but he wanted
them to know that even then God would still hear them. When they turned aside,
they would experience troubles and discipline, but when they turned back to
seek God they would find Him if they sought for Him whole heartedly. Lip
service and going through the motions would not suffice. It had to be the
product of genuine, absolute heart change. They had to turn to God because they
wanted Him and believed that He is the One true God, not just because they
wanted to be free from their difficulties. He is not a genie in a bottle that
lives to grant our wishes. He is our Creator and Savior, the Almighty God of
the Universe. We live to glorify Him. However, He is not aloof, indifferent, or
selfish. He wants a relationship with us, that is why we were created. He saves
us because He loves us, and He wants us to turn to Him because He wants to be
close to us. As with any earthly relationship, half-hearted or selfish motives
will not suffice and He can see right through them. He wants our whole heart,
just a spouse wants their love to be wholly devoted to them.
Who do you love and worship?
Does God have your whole heart?
