Devotions: Full of His Love

For the word of the Lord is upright,
And all His work is done in faithfulness.
He loves righteousness and justice;
The earth is full of the lovingkindness of the Lord.

Psalm 33:4-5 New American Standard Bible 1995

God’s word is upright. It is truth and can be wholly trusted. God’s word is not only the Bible, but also Christ. In John 1, He is referred to as the Word of God. They are synonymous. Literally and figuratively, the word of God is straight. It stays true to the truth, never wavers or swerves, but stays right on track. It is perfectly righteous. Everything He does is steadfast. He is faithful to us and to Himself. He never does anything that is contrary to His perfect, holy nature. We can trust Him to be true to us and to His character. He never changes and He will never forsake us. Because He is perfectly righteous and just, He also loves what is righteous and just. It pleases Him when we imitate Him, as it would any good father. Righteousness and justice are both attributes which He encourages people to cultivate. Often in the prophets, when the people are rebuked it is for not possessing those qualities. True religion is described as seeking justice and loving righteousness. They fulfill the commands to love God and others. If we are just, then we are loving our neighbor by being fair and seeking their best. If we are righteous, then we are loving God by living rightly and according to His standards. The earth is full of His lovingkindness. The word translated lovingkindness is hesed. It is a Hebrew word with such deep meaning it cannot be translated into one English word. It is a strong love which conveys a deep and steadfast covenant which leads to mercy and compassion. It is a kindness so much deeper than we could even comprehend, and the earth is full of it. His love and kindness can be seen everywhere. Nowhere can we escape the proof and evidence of His love.

Do you trust God? Are you aware of His goodness and how much He loves you? Ask God to show you His goodness and mercy. Ask Him to reveal His love and faithfulness.
