And this is love, that we walk according to His
commandments. This is the commandment, just as you have heard from
the beginning, that you should walk in it.
2 John 6 New American Standard Bible
1995
Love is not fluffy,
happy/feely, or wishy washy. True love is solid, unwavering and at times hard.
True love for God means obedience. We cannot say that we love God if we
knowingly and willfully do what He hates. That is selfishness not love. The
Bible tells us how to love others and that is found in obeying God’s commands.
His Law is summarized in loving Him and others, so obeying the law is showing
love. Interestingly, we show God love by obeying His commands, and His commands
are to love. So we love God by loving Him…This was not a new teaching when it
was written or now. What the Bible has always taught is still as true and
relevant as it always has been, that is why it is called the living Word of God. It is alive and
active. We have no right or authority to dismiss any part of Scripture for any
reason. So we love through obedience to God’s commands, which are to love
others. However, as stated earlier, love is not always easy. True love is not
tolerant. It does not overlook or condone sin because sin is going against
God’s law and that is not love. So just as it is not loving for us to act
contrary to God’s law, it is not loving for us to encourage or condone others’
actions against God’s law. Love does what is right, toward God and others, and
what is right is obedience. If we focused on true, godly love, we would never
sin. That is how we are to walk, to live, in true, obedient, godly love. Love
does what is best and right, not what makes people happy.
Do you love God? Do your
actions reveal a love for Him and others? Ask God to help you love others with
a true, godly love. Ask Him for the courage and willingness to show His kind of
love to others.
