Devotions: Supernatural Power

Do you not know? Have you not heard?
The Everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth
Does not become weary or tired.
His understanding is inscrutable.

He gives strength to the weary,
And to him who lacks might He increases power.

Isaiah 40:28-29 New American Standard Bible 1995

Isaiah chapter 40 talks about the greatness of God, and is a great passage to read on any occasion; when we need encouragement, when we doubt, when we are hurting, or when we want to worship. In this passage, God confronts the people’s claims that He had been absent or withheld justice from them and this is His response: He is the Almighty God. Not only does He not get tired or weary, but He gives strength and power to those who lack. His understanding is unfathomable. He knows things we could not begin to comprehend. God does nothing wrong. He cannot sin, nor is He ever unjust. He is the Everlasting God, the Creator of the universe. When we are weary and exhausted, we need to look to Him to strengthen us, to give us what we need to keep going. The actual Hebrew for the word strength here literally means “the power of God.” He doesn’t just give us power by human standards. He gives us supernatural power when we run out. When we do not have the strength to do something, He increases what we have so that we can do it. It is only by His power that we can do anything, and He will give us beyond our capability if we will trust in Him and seek His power instead of our own. The young and strong may grow weary and will eventually tire, but those who trust in the Lord will not. If we rely on ourselves and the reserves we have within us, we will run out, but if we rely on God we will never run out because His resources are without end. That is why we often find God when we come to the end of ourselves; we have nothing left so we are forced to turn to Him. Let us not wait until we are empty before we turn to Him. Let us seek Him continually, daily so that we will never run low.

If you are exhausted, turn to God, wait on Him, and allow Him to restore, replenish and give you what you need. Take a few minutes to worship the Almighty God who has no end or lack, and gives generously.
