Behold, I long for Your precepts;
Revive me through Your
righteousness.
Psalm 119:40 New American Standard
Bible 1995
Precept is another word for
truth or law. The psalmist was not just longing to read God’s word, but also to
obey it. That is how we can be revived through His righteousness, by obedience.
Our love and desire for God should be so strong that we have a deep longing to
read and study His word and obey it. We cannot say that we truly love God if we
have no desire to obey Him. The closer we grow to Him, the more we will see how
disobedience hurts Him. And the closer we get to Him the more we will desire to
please Him. It is part of the evidence of growing in godliness. Another key
point here is that we are revived through His righteousness. When we are
feeling down, discouraged or faint, the best way to bring life back into us is
time with God. Nothing can restore our hearts like time spent with our Father
and Creator. Only He can truly rejuvenate us. Like water to a withering plant
and springs in the desert, so is His goodness and righteousness to a weary
soul. The trick is that we have to seek it. It won’t happen on its own. Our tank
can only be refilled by seeking God, but we can keep it full by spending
regular time with Him. We will become dry and weary far less if seek Him daily.
This longing and reviving can be more easily quenched and satisfied by habitual,
constant communion with our Maker.
Are you longing for something
more? Do you need to be revived? Seek your heavenly Father. Spend time basking
in His goodness and righteousness. Strive to obey and please Him.
