Devotions: What the Future Holds

Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or in dread of them, for the Lord your God is the One who is going with you. He will not desert you or abandon you.

Deuteronomy 31:6 New American Standard Bible

This verse comes at the end of Moses’ last counsel to the Israelites before they crossed into the Promised Land and he died. While it was an exciting time to finally be entering the Promised Land, it was also intimidating. The land wasn’t empty. It was full of pagan nations that would not just move so the Israelites could take over, and some of them were giants. The Israelites would have to fight and conquer these people before they could live there, and Moses wasn’t going with them. He was the one who led them out of Egypt and through the wilderness for 40 years. He was the one who had wrestled with God on their behalf, and spoke to Him for them. In this verse he was reminding them that he wasn’t the one who actually accomplished any of what had happened. God did it. And God would continue to do it. Even though their physical, human leader would be leaving them, God never would, and He never will. They did not need to fear because God was on their side and He would fight for them. It was His plan so He would accomplish it and give them what they needed for what they had to do. All they had to do was trust Him.

The same goes for us. We can be strong and courageous because God is with us. He is here now and He is already where we are going. He will not leave us or forsake us. Whatever He calls us to do we can trust that He will help us accomplish it and give us what we need to do that. If it is His will, we can be assured that He will make it happen. We don’t have to fear or dread what the future holds because God is already there. Take courage. Be strong in the Lord and trust in Him.
