Devotions: Justified by Faith

Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we also have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we celebrate in hope of the glory of God.

Romans 5:1-2 New American Standard Bible

Whenever we see the word “therefore” it means that what is about to be said is based on what was just said, so to get the context we need to look back. The previous chapter talks about how Abraham was justified through faith, not works. He didn’t earn his justification; it came through believing in God and trusting Him and His promises. Did he do this perfectly? No, he was flawed for sure, but his life was marked by faith. His doubts and sin did not rule his life. It is only through our faith in Jesus that we are justified and saved. Because of that justifying faith, we have peace with God. We are no longer His enemies, which is where everyone starts because of sin. Sin makes us all traitors, but Jesus’ sacrifice makes us children of God if we believe in Him. It is also through Jesus that we receive grace, the gift of eternal life and forgiveness of sin. He did it all. We didn’t deserve, nor could we earn, any of it. Because of all of this we can rejoice and celebrate in the hope that we have, a sure hope that will not disappoint. We know that we have eternity. We will see God in His glory one day. Our status and position are not variable. It is secure. We stand as adopted children of God, forgiven, redeemed and justified. We stand in grace and no one can take us away from it. Are you trying to earn God’s favor? Are you trying to prove that you deserve His love? You can’t. But you don’t need to. You already have it. All you have to do is believe that Jesus, God the Son, died for your sins and rose from the dead. It is that faith, which motivates us into obedient action, which saves, all through the grace and power of God. Take some time to celebrate in the hope of God’s glory!
