Devotions: The Source of True Security

Trust in the Lord and do good;
Live in the land and cultivate faithfulness.

Psalm 37:3 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

This psalm contrasts the righteous and the wicked, showing how the good have true security, but the wicked will fall. What do the righteous do and why are they secure?

We can and should have confidence in the Lord. That is a command not a suggestion. We should rely on Him for what we need, completely. Security comes from relying on Him, and knowing that we can rely on Him. We can trust His faithfulness. To do good means to help others, it is an idea related to the well being of others. We are to be kind and gracious, helpful and generous. This is probably where the term “do-gooder” came from, put on by those who either were offended (because they knew they should but didn’t want to) or those on the receiving end who felt it wasn’t genuine. The first group we can’t do much about. They are convicted and that’s not our fault. The second group is a warning for us to be genuine and sincere in our charity.

Because we do these things, we can put down roots and associate with people faithfully. We can be secure in our livelihood and relationships because of our reliance on God and our righteous lifestyles and habits. This does not mean that we will live lives of health and prosperity. That is not biblical. It does mean that we will be blessed. We can have security knowing that we are God’s and He will take care of us. We don’t have to fear what will happen in the future; job loss, illness, political instability, etc. Those things may happen, but we don’t have to be afraid. We can have confidence in the One who is greater than those things, the One who is all powerful and all knowing, the One who has control over every circumstance. Are you worried? Do you fear the future or people? Trust in the One in control, put down roots and find security not in things or circumstances but in Him.
