Devotions: All We Need

For the Lord God is a sun and shield;
The Lord gives grace and glory;
He withholds no good thing from those who walk with integrity.

Psalm 84:11 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

God literally is our sun. Here on earth He does not provide physical light in that sense, but figuratively, He lights our path and illumines our minds. In heaven, though, He will be the source of all light in every sense. God is also our shield. He protects us from harm. He doesn’t make our lives completely pain and conflict free, but He does protect us. I can think of so many times when I almost had an accident and didn’t. That was God protecting me and if I hadn’t been aware of it I would never have seen His hand in my life. God is also the source of grace and glory. We can seek our own glory, but it is not fulfilling, lasting or right. We should seek God’s glory, to honor Him with our lives. Then, in His timing He will give us glory in some way. Grace is one of God’s greatest gifts. By definition, grace is receiving a gift we don’t deserve. Ultimately, that is salvation. We don’t deserve to be saved, but He gives it to those who believe. He is a good, loving Father. He does not hold out on us. He doesn’t prevent some blessing just because we haven’t “earned” it. He enjoys blessing us. Those who walk with integrity are literally those who walk in God’s ways, those who are upright or righteous. Now there is none righteous, on their own, but those covered by the blood of Christ through faith receive Christ’s righteousness. This is talking about those who seek to live as Christ does. We do not do it perfectly, but that is the path we walk as opposed to living for ourselves. Do you live uprightly? Do you desire to honor God? Do you seek Him as your sun and shield? Be assured that God rewards our faithfulness. He will bless us beyond measure if we look for it, if we seek Him and His righteousness.
