Devotions: Thanks for What Is

We ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters, as is only fitting, because your faith is increasing abundantly, and the love of each and every one of you toward one another grows ever greater.

2 Thessalonians 1:3 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

We have so much to be thankful for, not the least of which is the gift of others. We were made for community, and what community we have should give us cause for rejoicing. It won’t be perfect because the people in it are not perfect, but it is still there. The gift of fellowship is a great blessing and helps us in many ways; having help when we need it, the blessing of helping others when they need it, sharing, learning, sharpening and encouraging each other. Another gift to thank God for in that is the growth in ourselves and others. Increasing faith is a wonderful blessing which not only helps us but also those around us. A third and no less important gift is that of love. Again, it is not perfect because we are not perfect, but it is there and it is hopefully growing. We thank God, not because what we have is perfect, but because He has given it to us. As imperfect people, we cannot receive something perfect and should not expect to this side of heaven. We need to learn to be thankful for what is, rather than what should be. What fellowship and community do you have? Is there faith and love? Take some time to thank God for the fellowship there is and the community you have, even though it isn’t perfect or what you would like it to be.
