He who walks with wise men will be wise,
But the companion of fools will
suffer harm.
Proverbs 13:20 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
We become like those we are
around. It is pretty simple. Of course this does not mean that we should
completely distance ourselves from the world. It is a matter of influence, of
those with whom we spend a significant amount of time. Even then, it is a
matter of who influences who, because even Christians can be a bad influence if
they are not walking with God and devoted to living a godly life. We need to
check our relationships and see if we are influencing our friends or if they
are influencing us. Then we need to adjust our time spent accordingly. We also
need to decide what kind of people we want to be, if we want to be wise and
godly then we need to make sure that most
of our time is spent with those who are wise and godly. Notice I did not say all of our time. We do still need to be
out in the world trying to reach others, and there are some people, like
coworkers or family, whom we cannot choose good or bad. However, we can pick our
friends, and we need to make sure that they are a good influence on us. It is
also important to seek out mentors who are older and wiser, who can help us on
our walk to godliness. What kind of person do you want to be? What do you want
to be your legacy? Are you spending time with people who will help you reach
that goal?
